Three kilometres before Pürksi village in Noarootsi, a signpost informs that the Noarootsi tavern is nearby. Taverns do not have a very good reputation in Estonia and Soviet-era buildings tend to be neglected these days. That is not the case for former Noarootsi tavern, which has been restored to bright and white and reopened as Noarootsi Lokaal. Lokaal is an Estonian word for a small restaurant or a fancy tavern.
On the drinks menu you will find champagne and a restaurant-worthy selection of wines. The food served here fits wonderfully into the atmosphere. The dishes are homely and a little nostalgic, but at the same time special enough for the people of the village to have a reason to come out to eat. Surprisingly the kitchen and dining room are bustling with young people, not the old ones trying to keep the village alive. Noarootsi Lokaal offers authentic contemporary village cuisine and flavours. It’s worth coming here to dine from near or far. A simple tavern would not be capable of such a thing.
