Each town has a “restaurant street” with a disproportionately large number of food and drink establishments jostling for space. In Tartu, it is aptly named Rüütli (Knight) street, as the restaurant scene in Tartu used to be chivalrously faithful to its dull, staid monotony. The last two years have completely changed the street and now brand new concepts are competing against each other. The restless street has a constant stream of people going in and out of restaurants. Polpo is a place of relative peace in this madness, a classical restaurant with a contemporary milieu. To keep with the times the white tablecloths have disappeared and the dishes are more modern than ever.
“Slightly familiar and slightly surprising” is how head chef Karl Pajusaar describes Polpo cuisine and we agree. Pork side, which has national food status in Estonia, does not have the usual overly greasy texture. This is achieved by adding blackcurrant sauce in the final phase of cooking. The meat is accompanied by crunchy buckwheat popcorn and traditional potatoes are replaced with a celery-apple-potato side. Polpo continues to offer a good old-fashioned restaurant experience to its guests and is almost alone in this on Tartu’s restaurant street.
