Plaice, lamb and beer
These three words sum up everything you need to know about the restaurant in Kassari Resort. Lest ja Lammas is Estonian for plaice and lamb, so it does exactly what it says on the tin. Estonians tend to have a Pavlovian response to hearing the words smoked plaice. Caught from the sea nearby and freshly smoked, plaice is the quintessential Estonian summer flavour. The fish does not need any sides, except for maybe a cold pint of freshly brewed beer, which the restaurant also offers.
Lamb, on the other hand, is a relatively rare sight at the local dinner table. Hiiumaa is well-known for lambswool knitwear, but not so much for lamb-based dishes. Still more restaurants in Hiiumaa offer lamb than ones on the mainland. Does local fish and meat straight from the grill or smoke oven sound a bit too homely and simple for restaurants? We think these simple flavours alone are a good enough reason to hop on a boat to Hiiumaa and visit Lest ja Lammas.
