They say that small countries have big ambitions. The same must apply to islands because the tiny Muhu island has metropolis-sized ambitions when it comes to gastronomy. One of the front runners for these ambitions is restaurant Alexander in Pädaste Manor. New Muhu cuisine is an international collaboration here, as the head chef is German, the maître d’ is French, and you can hear a whole host of other foreign languages from the kitchen. However, the food is as local as it gets.
Locally grown duck is hard to find in Estonia, but in Muhu, a former employee of the Pädaste spa grows them for the restaurant. Soup of the day usually features whatever fish the local fisherman caught in the morning, today it happens to be pike. Dessert is made of peculiar rhubarbs that never flower, grown by islander Riina. What makes Alexander special is that they create fine dining and gourmet by combining ingredients others wouldn’t dare to put in the same pot.
The service creates a magical atmosphere that makes the outside world disappear. You can genuinely feel time standing still, and nothing can ruin the day, not even bad weather. Everything that seems complicated elsewhere becomes straightforward and everything that seems small and unimportant outside is big and central here.
